Today everything we toss out in front of visitors is called “interpretive”, yet most of the communications we give them are informational, not interpretive! Something interpretative is helping you understand or make meaning. When you visit a national monument, you might not understand the symbolism until you read the interpretative signs that explain and interpret the monument for visitors. Interpretation is a communication process designed to reveal meanings and relationships of our cultural and natural heritage, to the public, through first-hand involvement with objects, artifacts, landscapes, or sites.
